The David North Memorial Scholarship for Lighting Technology
at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts

    David North

ETC, Inc. established the David North Memorial Scholarship for Lighting Technology with a gift to University of North Carolina School of the Arts. ETC’s intention in making this gift is to provide financial need based support for the study of Lighting Technology in memory David A. North who was a longtime ETC employee, North Carolina Gentleman and supporter of The School of Design and Production.

David North loved the theater, but more than that, he loved helping people. He spent most of his career combining those two loves by working as a senior manager in the technical services department at ETC. He worked at ETC for over 20 years. In his latest role he served as the General Manager for ETC’s rigging division.

His career and life was spent in service to others so it is only fitting that a scholarship should be created in his name. He had a deep respect for the North Carolina School of the Arts and the theater electricians it produces. He gave his time and energy to the school, and mentored many interns during the course of his career at ETC. He died in 2017 at the age of 50 after a brief battle with brain cancer. Though his life was short, his legacy lives on in the hearts and minds of everyone he touched.

The David North Memorial Scholarship for Lighting Technology will be administered as an endowment fund under the following guidelines:

    • Primary consideration to be given on the basis of financial need to students continuing to their third and/or fourth year of study in Lighting Technology. Secondary consideration to be given on the basis of financial need to students entering their first or second year of study in the Lighting Design program who have demonstrated interest in declaring for Lighting Technology concentration in their third year of study. Although not a direct requirement, particular attention should be given to students from North Carolina who have demonstrated strong volunteerism within their community. The scholarship is to be awarded to a single student during the academic year.
    • The recipient shall be selected by the Director of Financial Aid in consultation with the Director of Lighting, Lighting Faculty and the Dean of Design and Production.
    • The scholarship does not have to be awarded to the same student multiple years. Determination to award this scholarship to the same student multiple years will rest with the Director of Financial Aid in consultation with the Director of Lighting, Lighting Faculty and the Dean, and will be predicated on the student’s ongoing academic and artistic success.
    • Additional gifts, living and testamentary, may be added to the fund at any time by an interested party. All gifts to the David North Memorial Scholarship for Lighting Technology are irrevocable.
