(15 March 2013) -- Established in 1888, Eastern Arizona College is the oldest community college in Arizona, serving the needs of the Gila Valley. Area residents have always been supporters of the arts, and Eastern has paced its performance facilities to their passion. Twenty years ago, the Lee Theater was constructed as part of the Gherald L. Hoopes Jr. Activities Center. This intimate 300-seat venue, which has hosted performers from around the world and has been loved and used by the college and local residents, recently upgraded much of its lighting system with state-of-the-art ETC LED lighting and controls. E-readers may seem to be threatening to do to libraries what email did to the post office – “except that libraries are roaring back,” says Carl Clegg, of Starlite Productions, Moorestown, New Jersey. “Libraries are thriving as multi-use venues -- loaning e-books, offering free computer access, and pairing lattes with literature in onsite cafes. Many libraries -- like mine -- are becoming the cultural centerpiece of their communities.” Clegg’s library -- the Burlington County Library in Westampton, New Jersey -- has invested to remake its facility, including a new roof and heating/air-conditioning, an expanded teen area, a new family area, an expanded indoor/outdoor café, and a 250-seat auditorium outfitted with an ETC Rigging™ system.
