Since running a carbon-arc Strong Trouper for his high school's US Bicentennial Celebration in 1976, Derek has worked in almost every capacity of the live entertainment industry. From assisting world-class Lighting Designers, to Production Designing corporate shows for KFC and IBM, to teaching seminars in Stage Technology, to running a spotlight for Madonna, Cher, and Streisand (not on the same billing!), to programming pirate shows, volcanoes, and fountains; he is knowledgeable, experienced, and most importantly, versatile. A self-described academician, Derek takes pride in his collection of texts on the history and practice of stage lighting and technical production, as well as his near-encyclopedic recall of equipment past and present. He is also a published author and is writing a book, tentatively titled "Stage Lighting According to Derek." Derek is an ETCP-Certified Entertainment Electrician, as well as an ETCP-Recognized Trainer, and sits on the ESTA Essential Skills for Entertainment Technicians Committee as a Subject Matter Expert in the fields of Audio and Scenic Fabrication.
