I am pretty familiar with the ION, but this week I get the chance to work on an Eos. Today I patched our Clay Paky Stage Zoom 1200's, and I noticed the CYM encoders in clutch mode instead of a smooth turn. I hit the fine key thinking it was just me, and it really didnt change anything. I rebooted the console, and went back to it, and it worked great until I hit the fine key, and then it changed to the clutch mode, and would not go back no matter how many times I went back and forth between fine and course. I noticed the same problem with the shutters with the Profile+. Things like edge worked just fine, but when I switch back to color... no smoothness. The console is 1.4.4, and the Eos is the backup with the RPU being primary. This has never been a problem for me before because the Ion doesnt have this feature, but it is going to annoy me if I cant make this work right.

Thanks!

Brian,

The Haptic Encoders are my favorite feature on Eos, let's try to diagnose between a hardware or software problem.

To test the encoders, go into the Face Panel Test from the Maintenance button from the shell. Click on Eos Keyboard, and you'll notice there are two check boxes labled "Firm" and "Smooth" Detent.  On start-up, the tester is a bit quirky, so click between firm and smooth a time or two, then see if the encoders perform correctly in the checked mode, switch back and forth a few times.  Check the push button feature while in firm mode. The icons should turn blue. (It's much easier to do in firm mode than smooth, - the encoders have such high resolution that its almost impossible to push the knob in with out twisting and changing the icon color.)

If the encoders behave correctly through the tester, there could be a bug in Eos software. Either way you may want to contact Technical Support at 800.688.4116

I hope this sheds some light.

Hi Kevin-

Just got off the phone with tech support. It seems like the problem may be software (personality) related as we are running 1.4.4. We went into the hardware diagnostics and everything was working fine. Support said that 1.4.5 may work better, as that was the software they were running during my phone call, and they did not have any problems with the personality I was using. We will update software tonight (console, RPU, RVI, and client) and see what happens. Thanks for the response.

Just as a note, I always have problems with the clutch on the encoders (multiple consoles). They seemingly have a mind of their own, sometimes they're hard as a rock and wont turn, even if they're in fine mode, and sometimes they have no clutch at all, even if they're in course mode. I find that just cycling between fine/course gets them back on track.

The update to 1.4.5 solved the problem. Everything works correctly now. Thanks!
