So I am looking for information on setting up an ION to send MSC commands from the console to a device. I am sure that it is possible, but the manual seems to focus more on Time Code control. I am just looking to trigger SFX or Q-Lab from the ION via MIDI, and in the Show Control record target screen all I see in information regarding time code.

The MIDI settings are in the Show Control settings in setup. Press [Displays] [Setup] [Show] [Show Control]. From there, press [MSC Transmit] to enable it, and set the MSC Transmit ID.

Right I got that. I am not sure, based on the manual, how to tell the desk to send a MIDI command on the execution of a cue. All I wan to to is when cue one GOs I want to send a MIDI GO to a Q-Lab system.

Has anyone gotten this to work?

Is there anymore information on this?

What version of software are you using?

There was a bug in 1.4.3 that prevented MSC from working on Ion. This bug is fixed in 1.4.4.

I am also trying to find a way to use midi show control from the ion to automate a snd computer.  Has anyone had any luck with midi show control transmiting from the ION to something else?

I'm using 1.4.4 I'm just not clear on two things:

How do I tell event one to fire when I go on Cue 1/9?

How do I tell event one to send an MSC signal that will fire cue 2 on SFX?

Right now you cannot customize the MSC string that is sent - e.g. If you have MSC Transmit enabled, the console will only "repeat" what you are go-ing on, on the console.

So if you push Go on Cue 3/34 then a MSC string of Go Cue 34, Cuelist 3 - will be sent.

So if I assign Event 1 to Cue 90 will it automatically trigger when I go on Cue 90 or do I need to tell it to execute or learn or something like that?

The only thing that will trigger an Event in the Show Control Display - are the following; SMPTE Timecode (LTC), MIDI Timecode (MTC), an Analog trigger or a Time of Day/Real Time Clock Trigger (RTC). Not a go push off of a cuelist.

It sounds like you're trying to execute a cue on SFX or something based off of a go push from Eos/Ion. If you cannot set SFX to execute the same cues on the same cuelist as the console for whatever reason then I would suggest setting SFX to listen to a different cuelist (if you can even set that, I don't know) and then create those cues as empty cues in the console in that cuelist. Then when you want to trigger - say, Cue 2 on the SFX cuelist - in your lighting cuelist perform an Execute x/2 where X is the number of the cuelist with the blank cues in it that you assigned for SFX use. Yeah?

Ok.... So if I just want to transmit MSC then enabling it in the setup is all it takes? I thought it would require the show control display so that was my hang up. Thanks. I'll have to see if I can make the whole thing happen now.

I have not used MIDI for the ion, but I have triggered numerous shows with an Express through MIDI. I have found that it's actually easier to trigger the console from q-lab than the other way around.

I have heard that. But for a musical when the sound guy has his hands full mixing it would be better for us to use lights to trigger sounds. If anyone else is trying this, I just got these instructions for setting up SFX to receive MSC.
