The ETC product catalog is dead.

Or is it? We hear a lot of conflicting opinions on how our product catalog is used - if it's used at all - from our dealers.

We hear the catalog referred to as a "gift" that sales people feel compelled to leave behind when they visit a customer.

We hear the catalog is the first place someone goes when they want to know about an ETC product.

We hear the catalog is the last place someone goes when they want to know about an ETC product.

But we're feeling like we need to get some opinions from the people who are buying and using lighting products every day. We don't want to do a survey, we just want to have a little dialogue.

So here's the deal: post a comment (or multiple) that addresses one of the following questions. On September 10, I'll pick five random commenters to receive some ETC SWAG (a t-shirt and something extra). Your comments need not be "positive" or "pro-ETC" to be eligible for SWAG, but they should be on-topic.

Q: If you've seen an ETC product catalog over the last few years, how did you use it?

Q: If you've found the ETC product catalog to serve a particular purpose for you, what is that purpose?

Q: What is it about the ETC product catalog that makes it useful, or useless, to you?

Q: If you could change one thing about the ETC product catalog, what would it be?

# re: The ETC product catalog is dead.

Q: If you've seen an ETC product catalog over the last few years, how did you use it?

A: I am a Master Electrician (buying power enabled) so I always keep a catalog on my desk, along with the other product catalogs. It's always useful.

Q: If you've found the ETC product catalog to serve a particular purpose for you, what is that purpose?

A: I use it mostly for product reference. It's always nice to have a physical catalog for quick overviews of what is available.

Q: What is it about the ETC product catalog that makes it useful, or useless, to you?

A: I like that I can always have a physical guide to products you offer. Sometimes the internet is slow, or designers, or producers don't like to "deal" with internet navigation. Physical is good.

Q: If you could change one thing about the ETC product catalog, what would it be?

A: I've always enjoyed the customer feedback stories or recent installs / demos that you post on your website. It's nice to read about how well the products work for others. I think putting a few more things like that (customer feedback: articles, letters, customer photos) in your product catalog would be a lovely touch. And a big confidence builder when making a buying decision.

Hope this helped.

Q: If you've seen an ETC product catalog over the last few years, how did you use it?

A: I am a Assistant and Designer so I always keep a catalog at my desk for quick fixture specs.

Q: If you've found the ETC product catalog to serve a particular purpose for you, what is that purpose?

A: I Find it useful to not have to look up products on the web all the time especial when I have many projects on my screen, I don't need one more window open.

Q: What is it about the ETC product catalog that makes it useful, or useless, to you?

A: I have always liked the physical catalog, call me old school. I enjoy having gobo catalogs around too its all the info in your hand.

Q: If you could change one thing about the ETC product catalog, what would it be?

A: I agree with analog, It would be nice to perhaps see some user reviews in a small section.

The Product Catalog is helpful as a quick overview of what's available, while I use the website for me in-depth details.  When looking to purchase new equipment, though, the catalog is a great way to compare multiple products quickly and look at more than one item without having to "go back" or have numerous tabs open.  From there, I have a good jumping off point to talk to sales representatives, etc.

# re: The ETC product catalog is dead.

Q: If you've seen an ETC product catalog over the last few years, how did you use it?

A: When I worked for a dealer, I used it on almost a daily basis, making certain I knew as much as I could on each product.  These days, as an educator, I've only used the catalog for historical perspective (it came in very handy while working on the USITT exhibit this past year) and for class lectures it is sometimes much easier to reach over to the shelf rather than hunt things down on the internet.

Q: If you've found the ETC product catalog to serve a particular purpose for you, what is that purpose?

A: I'd have to say again, the historical aspect.  I have a fascination with cut sheets and timelines, and having a piece of history in my hand is quite useful for those sections in the classroom; although having to have multiple catalogs can be quite cumbersome.

Q: What is it about the ETC product catalog that makes it useful, or useless, to you?

A: On occasion I've had non-theatrical folks ask me for opinions on theatrical equipment.  Having the catalog has been very useful in those instances as they can take it with them and browse it, rather than having to point them to a website or series of websites.

Q: If you could change one thing about the ETC product catalog, what would it be?

A: As much as I hate to say it, I'd make it an iPad app, where all versions of the catalog could be downloaded and carried with without breaking your back; you have an old "DAS" system?  No problem and no searching the website, there it is in the toolbox.  Just the thought of all of ETC's catalogs and cutsheets in one location (whether iPad, computer, etc) just makes me smile and dream of all of it's possible uses.

Q: If you've seen an ETC product catalog over the last few years, how did you use it?

I pick one up each time a new issue is released.  I find it an invaluable tool to learn about the products ETC offers.  I try to get as much literature on a product as I can before I start looking for quotes.  The catalog is an easy go-to for this and many other purposes, such as seeing any new ETC products that I missed at trade shows.

Q: If you've found the ETC product catalog to serve a particular purpose for you, what is that purpose?

A great reference for purchases.  I occasionally use it to see whether a product has a certain feature if I need to, but the mild level of detail make the website a more feasible option for this purpose.

Q: What is it about the ETC product catalog that makes it useful, or useless, to you?

I find it useful because it lists virtually everything ETC has to offer.  However I think it could benefit from more detail even though I recognize it may be costly to design and print it would be an even better reference.

Q: If you could change one thing about the ETC product catalog, what would it be?

I would have more detail included about each individual product.

Q: If you've seen an ETC product catalog over the last few years, how did you use it?

I pick one up each time a new issue is out. I'm a designer. And on my 9-5 gig, I am the one who recommends purchases.

Q: If you've found the ETC product catalog to serve a particular purpose for you, what is that purpose?

A great reference tool. Enables me to physically show someone what we're purchasing.

Q: What is it about the ETC product catalog that makes it useful, or useless, to you?

It's useful because it lists everything ETC has to offer.  I'm old school. After 30 years in the business, I still like having a physical copy of my vendor catalogs.

Q: If you could change one thing about the ETC product catalog, what would it be?

More installation news, end user reviews.

Q: If you've seen an ETC product catalog over the last few years, how did you use it?

I have never seen a print catalog even when I was at LDI. All of my info comes from the website or a pdf brochure from the dealer.

Q: If you've seen an ETC product catalog over the last few years, how did you use it?

I agree with redwingleader  ... mostly. I have seen one a long time ago, but it was a catalyst to find more info on the internet.

I overwhelmingly prefer finding info from the website.

# re: The ETC product catalog is dead.

I occaisionally find a catalog helpful when I'm on a sales call.  I use the binder with some regularity (sometimes it's just faster to grab paper than click around on the website), and frequently bring a binder to a call in case I need it for reference or to show cut sheets to a customer.  If I need to leave something behind, the catalog is a good size & level of detail to leave with a customer.

Q: If you've seen an ETC product catalog over the last few years, how did you use it?

I can't remember the last time I have had my own ETC product catalog, I think I may have leafed through one at a dealer or perhaps at a USITT booth.

Q: If you've found the ETC product catalog to serve a particular purpose for you, what is that purpose?

When I used to use it is was more as a discussion tool in meetings. Sometimes it is easier to flip through pages in a large group than the internet.

Q: What is it about the ETC product catalog that makes it useful, or useless, to you?

As I mentioned above, having that tangible object is sometimes very helpful. However, maybe a smaller version of the catalog is a direction to go, something to serve as a discussion starter with more information available in larger print media or simply on the website.

Q: If you've seen an ETC product catalog over the last few years, how did you use it?

I've used it to browse accessories for current fixtures in my inventory and to look at potential future fixtures to add to my inventory.

Q: If you've found the ETC product catalog to serve a particular purpose for you, what is that purpose?

When purchasing something such as fixtures I like to have a physical catalog to go through as opposed to a web site with a bunch of products posted, it seems just easier to find what I want this way.

Q: What is it about the ETC product catalog that makes it useful, or useless, to you?

Just having a physical catalog in my gig bag as opposed to having to pull something up in a computer.

# re: The ETC product catalog is dead.

As a lighting technician that uses nothing but ETC i have seen my fair share of ETC catalogs and i have to say i just purchased an Ion switching from an Insight 3 that is still working incredibly...just goes to show how long ETC lasts...anyways:

Q:If you've seen an ETC product catalog over the last few years, how did you use it?

Mainly to keep up to date with ETC but I also use it to show fellow technicians about the incredible ETC products.

Q: What is it about the ETC product catalog that makes it useful, or useless, to you?

It is nice to actually have something in my hands instead of a website.

Q: If you could change one thing about the ETC product catalog, what would it be?

Show some more info and pictures of individual products and show some examples of use.

Q: If you've seen an ETC product catalog over the last few years, how did you use it?

As a general reference.

Q: If you've found the ETC product catalog to serve a particular purpose for you, what is that purpose?

It's a general reference. It sits in my Product Library right next to my desk. It's the first place i look when i need a quick reference during a design.

Q: What is it about the ETC product catalog that makes it useful, or useless, to you?

As above

Q: If you could change one thing about the ETC product catalog, what would it be?

I'm happy with it as it is. Perhaps a little more tech info with accessories and such. Additional system riser examples and so on.

Cheers
